This webinar on gender and labor in fisheries will be conducted to increase awareness and recommend cooperative actions that are necessary in having a gender and social inclusive approach to address labor issues in the fisheries sector. It is being conducted by a partnership between the Sustainable Fish Asia (SUFIA) Project of the USAID Regional Development Mission Asia (RDMA), the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral-Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF), the Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries Section of the Asian Fisheries Society (GAFS), the Indian Council of Agricultural Research Central institute for Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT) and the Society for Fisheries Technologists India (SOFTI).

Participants in this webinar will be from fisheries organizations (government sector), private sector, civil society/NGOs, academia, GAFS/AFS members, and other interested groups.

The SUFIA Project focuses on the issue of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, which is hampered by deficiencies with multilateral national arrangements, poor management and monitoring of fisheries management areas, and lack of country-level deterrence to fishing violations. These violations and illegal activities do not only include overfishing and other environmentally destructive practices, but also labor abuses and inequalities along the fisheries value chain. With most advocacies and actions focusing on work at sea, which is dominated by men, the issues and concerns of land-based fisheries workers and support system, the majority of whom are women, are mostly overlooked. The SUFIA Local Capacity Development (LCD) Activity, implemented by RTI International, conducted a Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) analysis which revealed the need for more dialogues on gender in fisheries. SUFIA LCD Activity has therefore joined with the Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries Section (GAFS) of the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS) and regional partners, to discuss the current situation in the Asian region and to work on an action plan with recommendations for specific stakeholder groups.

This Webinar is the first of a series of webinars in the run-up to the 8th Global Symposium on Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries (GAF8) to be held in 2022. GAF8 will be organized by GAF Section of the Asian Fisheries Society and hosted by the Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) (SOFTI) and the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology India (ICAR-CIFT) in Kochi.
